This can include not getting adequate sleep; not getting the right kind of sleep; and not getting consistent sleep.

Stress of modern life tends to keep us on high alert, tossing and turning throughout the night.

What Can You Do?

Unfortunately, many reach for a drug cure instead. Many will be given an anti-depressant, pain medication, muscle relaxant and/or an antibiotic that treat the symptoms by suppressing them but not the actual cause.

Are you aware that one of the most common side effects of taking prescription drugs is … fatigue itself?

For a quick fix, some go for the unhealthy energy supplements such as energy drinks to get a burst of energy; but these ‘instant’ pick-me-up albeit convenient, unfortunately can bring more harm to the body when taken in excessive and in a long run.

Of course, even if you’re not on any medication, but with the enormous demands stacked on your shoulders daily, a pretty good healthy diet sometimes can’t supply enough of the right nutrients your stressed-out body needs. This is termed as ‘nutrient deficiency’.

The Right Nutrients

Without the right nutrients, your body’s defense against diseases will crumble.

Without the right nutrients the body’s natural repair system will crash.

And without the right nutrients, your body’s energy production capability will plummet.

Are Energy Drinks Safe?

Used as 'energy supplements', energy drinks contain high levels of sugar, although some offer artificially sweetened 'diet' versions.

A can of “Red Bull Energy Drink” (250 ml), for example, contains 41 g of sugar (sucrose) and 400 mg of glucuronolactone, another kind of sugar.

This is equivalent to about 10 teaspoons of sugar. As you can see it's really quite easy to gulp down 20 teaspoons of sugar this way!

Other than sugar, the other main ingredients in most energy drinks are caffeine (50 to 100 mg/can) and the amino acid, taurine (1000 mg/can). Guarana or yerba mate, both of which also contains caffeine, is sometimes added.

Of course, consumption of a single energy beverage will not lead to excessive caffeine or taurine intake; however, consumption of two or more cans in a single day, daily—certainly will!

Excessive caffeine consumption (about 400 mg/day) can cause your heart to race and blood pressure to spike. Other symptoms of caffeine overdose may include vomiting, hallucinations, sweating and death.

Incidentally, mixing an energy drink and alcohol too stresses the heart as the mixture can significantly dehydrate a person.

Although there have not been enough studies done to determine the long-term effects of caffeinated taurine drinks, deaths have been linked to them! So don't play Russian Roulette with your life; there is a much safer natural alternative to these over-hyped energy drinks.

Below are some essential nutrients a.k.a. natural energy boosters that contribute to 'energy'. With natural energy supplements, you can regain your energy―if you have already lost it.

Sports Energy Supplements

Most sports supplements are actually ordinary supplements with higher doses. This is because most athletes require a lot of oxygen when performing.

The combined effect of large intakes of oxygen with depleted nutrients during exercise can lead to the formation of oxidative stress in the body, ultimately raising the number of those nasty molecules called free radicals.

Quercetin

Quercetin, a bioflavanoid that inhibits formation of free radicals and supports circulatory health by promoting integrity of tissues in small blood vessels. Hence it may effectively treat and prevent allergic symptoms. Bromelain, an enzyme from pineapple, and quercetin are synergists, and should be taken together to enhance absorption.

Amino Acids

Carnitine promotes energy production in cells by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondrion, an intracellular structure that generates metabolic energy in the form of ATP, the “universal” energy molecule in the body. Good news for those want to lose those ugly bulges and convert extra flabs into useable energy!

Arginine plays an important role in several important pathways, including the synthesis of proteins, the production of creatine phosphate, needed to produce ATP, and to ensure nitric oxide, a secondary messenger involved in blood flow, secretion is sufficient. Good news for the men!
